I just bought a 1987 mint set on ebay, my first coin purchase online (and only my second from ebay ever.) $8.25 plus shipping. I've been looking for 1987 halves, but I figured, why not get the whole set? Now I'm suffering buyer's remorse--I really just wanted to fill the year gaps in my circulated kennedy halves collection, but these coins aren't circulated, and I'm not sure I'd want to break them out of the mint cellophane, though I could move all of my halves to 2x2s from the little Whitman folders...hmmm. Should I keep the mint sets in the mint cellophane? I guess I have the rest of my life to decide. And I also stopped at a coin store on the way home from work and bought an AU 1893 Columbian Expo half. I'm really not big on commems, but I read The Devil In The White City by Eric Larson recently, and it made me want to own a little piece of that history. That was a fascinating book--I recommend it. These are two of my biggest coin purchases ever! They might not seem big to you, but I feel the need to tell someone.
Hi Blue, I recently bought an AU columbian on ebay myself. Just came across it, liked it, and bought it as a gift for a friend who grew up in and loves the windy city. They're readily available, and you certainly can't buy a barber half of that age/grade for 10X that! I have a problem though- now I want my own! They are a neat piece of history, as are many of the classic commemoratives. Of course some of the CComs celebrate really obscure events (bridgeport half anyone?) Hope you like it when it comes- post a pic! don
I got a few 1893 Comm from a hoard I bought a part of....I got them pretty cheap because they were not AU...maybe XF at the most. BTW---you said that it was your first ever online buy but your second from ebay...how did you buy from ebay and not online? Speedy
I tripped you up with my very poor wording--sorry. I said it was my first evercoin purchase online--and I should have said in parentheses "and only my second purchase of any sort of item on ebay ever." I bought a book about a year ago. And yeah--those coins are pretty common, and it looks like you can find them in XF or lower for less than ten dollars. We read Devil In The White City for my book club, and I look forward to showing the coin to my friends. I might try posting a pic of a coin or two sometime soon, but I don't have a macro lens. I'll have to experiment to see if I can get anything resembling a clear shot.
