I was wondering if anyone could help. Could anyone tell me if this coin is a fake or not. I've had the coin for about 25 years and it was bought from a coin shop which specialised in selling coins and stamps. I've been looking on the internet tonight at Elizabeathan coins and none appear to be in as good condition as this one and so I'm thinking that it might not be real. Thanks in advance.
Not sure what to say. There is 1 or 2 design differences from known genuine examples, but it could be die varieties. You can see a very nice one - HERE But the coin has definitely been worken on. It appears that it suffered some damage and somebody tried to repair it - unsuccessfully. Either that or it is an out and out fake.
I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling that way, then. What bothers me are the waves around the shield on the reverse.
I may be wrong but I have a strong feeling the the waves around the shield is due to pixel distortion from whatever Picture Software was used! The Paint Program sometimes distorts the pixels when a picture file is imported from another Picture Program then edited and saved. IMHO, it appears to be genuine and was apparently a Jewelry piece! The two repaired areas on the Obverse appear to be repairs where the coin was Silver soldered to a brooch or necklace backing. Frank
Could be I suppose Frank, but there's waves on the obv too. Hammered coins will have these waves sometimes, but not usually like these.
Huntsman53 - the waves you mention around the shield are actually on the coin its self and are probably due to a previous owner over polishing the coin. The marks on the obverse do look as though the coin has been attached to something else in the past. So, I'm a bit confused. Is this likely to be an original coin? Also I always thought it was a shilling but is it a sixpence and what is this type of coin worth? Again, thanks for all your comments and help in advance.
Frankie I still have my worries that the coin may not be genuine. But there is no way to tell for sure just by looking at pictures. But even if it is genuine, with the damage done to the coin any value will be minimal. Of that I am certain. And yes, it is a sixpence.
