I believe the new POPE will have to wait until 2006 as it is my understanding, at this time, the 2005 coins have already been minted and will be issued.

They must have changed the history books since I was in school. It was definitley 1492 when I learned it.

Well, I sent in an "order" (more like a futile pipedream) for 2 Mint sets and two proof sets. I will be lucky if I get nothing. If I am unlucky, maybe they will come to my house and take back the one Mint set they sent me last year.

Alt least you're in their list. I've send email and letters to them and have gotten no response whatsoever... :(

Well, you ain't the only one. :(

Chances of making it to the customers' list with the Vatican and Monaco are almost zero.

I should have signed up when I was there, but I didn't know how.

JBK I think the best bet for all of us on the Vatican customer list is to only ORDER one of each item offered as that is the best you will ever do at this time. I have been pretty lucky since 2002 when the euro was introduced so I am not complaining except for the fact I have NEVER been able to get a gold piece. I do think they should do that with a drawing from all gold orders!

Those who only want one set of the 2005 Vatican "circulation" coins should be in, or go to, Rome now ;-) Tomorrow morning the annual direct sale is at San Paolo fuori le mura. But they do not sell silver or gold coins there ...

I ALMOST tried that in 2002. Good thing I ddn't, as they cancelled it last minute.

I did manage to get at least one envelope mailed back to me from the Vatican Post Offcie with a Vanact Seat stamp. A nice souvenir - lots of people saved them new, but few, I woul dimagine, used them postally, and the validity is now over.

This year's sale was not canceled :) The newspaper "La Repubblica" has some nice pictures; on the front page http://www.repubblica.it/ click on "In fila per le monete del Papa". Or go the slide show directly to see collectors "camping" in front of the place where the coins are sold:

(Despite the "2003" in the URL, these are pictures from this year's line.)

Contrary to the images at the end, they only sell the FDC/BU set (not the proof set) there. Or so I heard ...

The Pope came through for me today. I had the day off and I got home from picking my mother up from the airtport to find a receipt in my mailbox for a registered letter. Rather than wait until tomorrow to go to the PO to get the package, I walked all aoround my neighborghood trying to find the mailman. After finding three (not mine, though) I found the right one. I got my package and sure enough it was TWO of the 2004 2 euro coins from the Vatican.

I paid 11 euros each, and they are in shop windows at anywhere from 119 to 175 euros.

I could stand to have more days like this.

Great! That was worth chasing the mailman ;-) Guess that these extremely high prices of almost €200 won't last long, since it seems that many who ordered these coins from the UFN actually got them, so the market will "cool down" a little. But I am pretty sure that you will always get quite a bit more than €11 for each piece ...

I thought of that, too. I just got minem so they are still trickling out.

They are nice - I am pretty sure these do no troll around in barrely and bags like normal coins. I'd be hard pressed to find any scratch on them.

    What are essais, test sets?

Some of the essais sets are unbelievably cheap (still at 50 some $). The test sets are somewhere in the 20$ range. I thought essais are prove sets. Then why are ppl bidding to death for a set costing 300$?

for those of us that have long since given up hope of getting genuine Vatican euro sets, you can also get non monetary "pattern" sets like this for about $50.
Pretty to look at but don't try to spend them.

Are they at least "official" though? I know the patterns (usually look the same as the regular issue) and test tokens (looks very different and actually says "TEST TOKEN" on them) in Canada are highly collectable and range from couple thousand dollars to a million. If they are official trial sets and patterns why did they mint several thousand sets? Are we talking about the same patterns?

Essai is a French term - the closest word in english I suppose would be pattern. But they weren't test sets or coins. Essais were struck as part of a contest if you will. When the govt. decided to change a coin's design they would hold a copmpetition. Various artist would submit their entry, essais would be struck and given to the judges and a winner for the new coin design would be chosen from them.

Essais were often struck in various metals, copper, silver, gold, platinum - even base metal, and many times the same design would be struck in more than one or all of the above metals. They were also struck in different thicknesses - some were normal coin thickness, others were struck in what is known as pierfort ( eng. piedfort ), or double thickness.

Some can be quite rare, but value is strictly determined by demand as most are not that expensive at all.
