Something new was discovered in the collection yesterday. Looking at these three raw Flying Eagle Cents, one was found to be a small letters and two were the large letters variety. To be honest, I never noticed this until all three were on the table in front of me yesterday. Unfortunately, there was no 8 over 7 to be found. [Small letters has a space between the A & M of AMERICA and the large letters has the A & M touching]. Tonight all three get put in 2x2s and they will receive labels. What is your opinion about these three raw coins? Perhaps you could suggest the details & net grades to put on the labels. Begin with the darker large letters cent in the top right & go clockwise. Very best regards, collect89
Those are great coins. The darker 1858 is EF-45. The other two are AU-55 and AU-58. I don't net grade, but on the dark coin I think I see scratches on the obverse, so I would note those on the holder. Also, the coloring on the reverse of the coin on the left appears to be either a stain, or perhaps AT. I would note that as well if it's the case.
How carefully did you examine for the 8/7 variety. Also note that there is MORE than one 8/7 variety (I know there's at least 2). The two diagnostics near the date can be VERY hard to see. I lucked out and my 1858 turned out to be a 8/7. But even with my 10x loupe it took a while for me to be sure. I appears I still have the image (the coin has been sold.) I'll post it if you need.
Kanga - I thought all the 8/7's had a broken wing tip? And all are on the large letter variety. Right??? My grades are xf45, xf45, au50(stained or corroded reverse - not sure). I see a little more touch of wear on the first two on the bow and feathers on the eagles thigh.
There is a variety WITHOUT the broken wing tip. That's what I had. You also have to look for the (very small) diagnostics around the date. Too many beers right now to post responsibly. Just answer this with anything and I'll put the image up tomorrow. The way I know this is correct is MFD is a small cent specialist AND his buddy is doing FE's. He didn't have my variety so I turned the AU 1858/7 into a MS-64 1858 FE AND a MS-64 1862 IHC. He got what he wanted and I improved my type set.
Here's images of the coin I had. The whole coin. Note NO broken wing. http://home.comcast.net/~dcderoo/1-1858-LL-AU58.jpg Obverse doubling, most noticeable at the top of "UNI" http://home.comcast.net/~dcderoo/1-1858LL-AU58-ddo.jpg The two diagnostic "blips" in the date area. http://home.comcast.net/~dcderoo/1-1858LL-AU58-date-arrow.jpg
Thanks for the input ! Thanks for the input. The one AU is very lightly cleaned & far from being a problem coin but I noted it anyway. Very best regards, collect89
Thanks for the complement The labels are Avery #5160 1" x 2 5/8" PSA supplied 30 labels per sheet. When a label is needed, it gets entered into an Access database & printed. The label is then cut to fit the top & bottom of the 2x2 depending upon the coin size. Very best regards, collect89
