Edited to add: @TuckHard's post came in before mine, but mine actually fits his request as well: a bird is an animal, and the coin is from the 3rd century.

Mariniana (deceased wife of Valerian I), Silvered Billon Antoninianus. 254-258 AD, Viminacium [Rome?] Mint. Obv. DIVAE MARINIANAE, Veiled and draped bust right on crescent/ Rev. Wow! I've never seen this type of heard of Mariniana before but this coin is beautiful. Is the bust in crescent a common design? I've never seen that used but it's amazing with the divae type.

The crescent beneath the bust was used for empresses (and other women) on antoniniani. It's one way of distinguishing them from denarii at a time when both were being minted, just as the radiate crown vs. the laurel wreath does so for emperors and their sons, etc.

    Valerian:

    Valerian I, AD 253-260.
    Roman AR antoninianus, 2.75 g, 20 mm, 7 h.
Uncertain Eastern mint, 2nd emission, AD 256-260.
Obv: IMP C P LIC VALERIANVS·P·F·AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from the front.
Rev: PIETAS AVGG, Valerian, holding eagle-tipped scepter, and Gallienus, holding parazonium, standing facing each other, sacrificing over lighted altar between them.
    Refs: RIC 285; Göbl 1684e; Cohen/RSC 152; RCV 9955; Hunter 73.
Notes: The ANS attributes this issue to Cyzicus, Göbl to Samosata, and RIC to Antioch. According to the introduction of RIC volume V, during Valerian's reign, some coins minted in Asia cannot certainly be attributed to either Antioch or Cyzicus (p.22-26). RIC dates this issue to AD 255-56.

Isn't it just AMAZING that Athens anticipated the the Euro 2,500 years ago! To mint millions of these and set them aside so that Greece could issue them! What great foresight... :D

From the obverse inscription and hair, I'd say Plautilla.

That's what I started searching for way back when. I think legend starts PAV.. so possibly Julia Paula as she has similar hair types also. I have not given up on Plautilla.

There are four Paulina examples on Isegrim from three cities. Would love to have one of her. Quite a few people (Pekka k, Mark Fox) have checked with no luck and I'm fine with not knowing. It's the eternal search.

I think that Athena's look on these coins reminds of Roman parade helmets- eg the Crosby-Garrett helmet.
