Anyone still working on a Box of Twenty?

The nice thing about the concept is you can set your own rules. There is nothing that says you have to do anything with a Box of 20, except keep it at twenty coins!

Of course the constant evolution and upgrading is the way to go, in my opinion. But nothing says you can't also keep some cheaper coins that you just happen to like.

Hey, maybe have ten in rotation and ten that are more long-term, sentimental "keepers"? Why not? Whatever you like.

Somewhere a few years back, I saw somebody who had a Box of 20 with all 1964 Kennedy halves! Sure, I think he had P- and D-mints and Accented Hair and proofs and business strikes, but I still did not understand that collection at all. We all march to our own drummer, though, and I suppose if one really likes 1964 Kennedy halves, then hey, great. (They bore me to death, personally.)

    Sometimes.

While I accidentally left it off the list, I did upgrade my (defaced and possibly counterfeit) 1880 $3 gold for a certified 1856. I recently swapped out a cleaned AU 1875-S 20 cent piece for an 1875-CC in MS-62. And last year, I involuntarily replaced (and upgraded) my 15-cent note and 1996-W dime after mine were stolen out of my junk cabinet.

Other times, it's less clear that I added value. For example, I swapped out an 1861-O in EF-45 for an S.S. Republic Shipwreck Effects coin. I'm not sure that's an upgrade.

Still other times I dither. I have a 1881 3CN in PR-65 that's worth about the same as my 1851-O 3CS. Ditto choosing between a 2009 Ultra High Relief $20 and the MS-62 1893-S. I also argue with myself whether the Trade Dollar, Silver Dollar, and Gold Dollar are different denominations. If I added a silver dollar, it would be a 1900 O/CC to include an overmark.

The upgrade "candidates" that my budget might allow are the 2-cent coin (MS-61 RB) and the quarter eagle (MS-62). Others, like the branch mint gold, get too expensive too quickly.

Those Guardhouse boxes I have hold 25 coins, not 20. It is so hard to coordinate coin holders with these boxes; I always have too many or too few holders to fill a box of 25.

Variety is the spice of life why stop at twenty? My philosophy "If it's worth a second look and you like it buy it."

It depends how you define "value" as the answer is different.

If we define value as dollar value, then the answer is "not always" since I might replace a $500 coin with a $100 coin. However, when value is defined as joy you get from the new piece, then the answer is "yes" because I replaced the old coin with something I like better.

Army Navy is the best football game of the year by far, especially when Navy wins :D

No you just need a membership.

For PCGS get the $249.99 one, the 8 vouchers that come with it actually save you money on your first submission.

If you do NGC get the $150 one where you get equal credit.

My son was Navy. He was on the first tour of the USS Carl Vinson. In fact, he was Sailor of the Quarter on that first tour. Big deal for a ship with 5000.

I won't knock anyone who wants quantity or really just likes accumulating, but it's just not an interest to me. Many collectors will start out trying to do a bunch of sets and as time goes on want higher grades or lose interest and switch to a type set or some world stuff etc. I much more enjoy just getting things that I like with no restrictions

I really like this idea because it can help keep collecting from becoming hoarding. When you place no limits on your collection, you may not always buy exactly what you want, or buy for the sake of buying, but limiting yourself to a "box of 20" (or some number) will make you think really hard about each purchase.

I speak from having gone through a hoarding phase myself, which only left me with a random pile of coins that I don't remember why I purchased and wasn't sure why I held onto. It was fun until I reached a certain point, then it simply became overwhelming and felt more like an addiction. So I would be open to a "box of 20," but I need to get my collection down to 20 first. :D

Obverse has a few fly specks, but I think if the coin is viewed in hand, they'll be more like gnat specks. Seems to hold up well against some MS67s I've seen but I have rose colored glasses so...

BTW, I was a 'bee. Engineering Aide.

    I believe there would be (5) 1964 Kennedy coins. 1. heavy hair accent, 2, 1964 D, 3. 1964 Proof, 4.1964 SMS, and 1964
