I expected the 80/79 VAM to be visible to the naked eye, but it seems like this one is a lot more subtle than I expected. Do you think this is the overdate with midsized mintmark, or am I seeing things? http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compute.amazonaws.com/wiki/1880-O_VAM-4
There is something funky going on with the '1' & 'first '8' of the date, IMO. Possibly a re-punch with larger numbers, but why? The size and position of the numbers do not correlate with the reference photos. In any case, this is not 1889/79, IMO.
I am just a little confused, or tired. Your title is about a VAM 5 and the link you provided is for a VAM 4.
There are many 1880 dollar dies from the various mints that show minor artifacts in and around the date that are not recognized as overdates, even though it is possible that they are in fact successfully overdated dies. The chances are that if they have not been accepted as overdates by now, they never will be.
Sorry. Too long staring at the VAM guides and trying to nail down the often minor differences / unclear indicators.
Understand. I still have two Morgans that I can't VAM. Endlessly going through the pages and continuously frustrated.
