This penny isn’t what it looks to be copper plated. This penny is also seen in the thread treasures in my sister’s piggy bank in the spec. container. Also I put a very thin layer of olive oil to see if it’s really is “stamped” zinc with no copper clothes .
Appears to be removed, after it left the mint. @paddyman98 has looked at and answered more like this, so I'm sure he will be along shortly.
Your coin has the look of one that had its copper layer stripped off. This is a very common science experiment.
Or for us lazy folks.... You can lay a cent between a piece of leather and give it few solid whacks with a hammer. The thin copper layer will simply fall away.
thx guys but what does it really look like if the U.S. Mint did forgot to electroplate copper on the penny
The surface of such a coin would be smooth like a regular coin and not pitted. At least when it was new. Your coin still qualifies as a curio.
This is one I've had since 1987. First bought it as a graded coin from Anacs. Eventually had PCGS grade it.
Are all blank planchettes silver in color ? Every once in a while I'll find a brassy looking cent! Do they use different ones,?
