Modern cents are a zinc (silver) core with a thin layer of copper. Scrape a modern cent on an abrasive surface and you see the zinc (silver) core. Looks like yours may have been in the road and the traffic abraded the copper away.
Welcome to the site. Modern pennies (Lincon cents) are made out of zinc, which is silver in color, covered by a very thin layer of copper. Your coin was scraped over something, probably a parking lot, that ground away the copper layer in the high spots revealing the zinc underneath.
Welcome to CT Candice. Here is my two cents on posting photos for new members. Many here HATE having to click on links or thumbnails and then manipulating them to see the coin. You should always post FULL IMAGE photos (after you upload your photo, two buttons appear: Thumbnail and Full Image, click Full Image and your photo appears full size on your post and is easily enlarged by clicking on it. Always show both the obverse and reverse, even if your question is just about one side. Members can often give more valuable information having both sides to evaluate. Crop out superfluous background so just the coin shows, and post photos with correct orientation so members don't have to turn their computer in some awkward fashion to view it properly. Add close ups of areas you have questions about and make your questions as definitive as possible so we know what you are asking for. And try to have the best lighting possible to show the most favorable photo of the coin. Hope this helps in the future. Good luck.
I see.. But the coin is very shiny and new looking.. dosen't appear to have any damage to it.. Thanks for your response
Zinc also...probably sanded away the coating of copper...ever notice all metals, colorwise, are either silver, gold, or copper.
The coin is extra shiny and new looking.. thinner than the average penny.. has the silver all the way around it.. dosen't show any signs of damage
You are welcome. The important thing about collecting for me is to have fun, so enjoy yourself, post and ask us any questions you may have.
Great photos. Thanks for posting, and like others have already said, it is just a damaged (PMD=post mint damage) what some call a Zincoln cent. NAV (no added value).
