Coin Inventory Software -- recommendations?

I have been looking around at the different coin collection inventory software. I am looking for an economical - and preferable free software -that I can download. I have DL 2 already, but not going to use them because they expire in 30 days. Figure they will expire just about the time I really get going.

Does anyone have an recommendations? I don't mind paying a little bit, but can't afford a lot for that right now - although I know there are some really good ones out there. Wouldn't mind being recommended those also, for when I can afford it. Spent too much on coins lately. :?

Buy a notebook and spend more money on coins

 

I know this isn't terribly helpful, but I haven't really been happy with any of the free ones I have tried.

mbbiker - I already have a notebook, but they get lost with my other notes, and numerous projects - and since I spend more time at computer, I figure I may be able to get more organized like that.

I am always having to find which notebook I wrote something in and things get lost between my to-do-lists, grocery lists, etc., etc. I currently have a specific notebook that I designated for coins..........now where did I put it???????????? :?

I want to be helpful but i can't so i just told you how i do my coins.

 

This may be off subject, however, have you thought of using a database program. I have MS Works and set mine up in a data base. Of all the programs I have seen all of them require manual updates. Database may be a little more work, but, you can set it up the way you want with the information you want. I tried the online software at www.coinworltrends.com which works well but you have to be a subscriber to Coin World. Good Luck yell if you want some help. :roll:

 

You are not the only one Chrysta. I have tried several and I keep going back to my tried and true spreadsheet.

I know Access like the back of my hand but I have never even bothered to write anything for my own collection with it. A spreadsheet fills all my needs, simply and easily.

 

I really like the idea of a spreadsheet and I think that I will start to do the same. What is the format that you guys/gals use and what info do you log in?

 

Thanks Jess on the tip about using a spreadsheet. I had actually thought about that, but spreadsheets seem so much like work. I love those great programs that have the information about the coins in them, and may someday get one -- but for now - I think I WILL probably go with your idea. I had kind of forgotten about that, but if all else fails, will probably "just do it.". One thing, about coin inventorying - it is SO tedious ----- but fun!

 

I started with MS Works spreadsheets in '89 but imported them into MS Excel when I was able to acquire that program a couple years later. It does everything I need and is quite easy to use, configure and update.
I suggest using some kind of spreadsheet, or database, program early on as it is easier to update over time rather than finally deciding to start one after you've already been collecting 10 years.
Categories I use in my spreadsheet are:
COUNTRY, DENOMINATION, DATE, METAL, KM#, CONDITION, MINTAGE, VALUE, BOUGHT FOR PRICE, WHEN BOUGHT, DIAMETER, MISC.

 

Tbirde - I liked your website and will probably be buying a few coins from you after I look to see what I need. I know that I need some P quarters. I know, I know - it's not profitable to collect state quarters - but it is still fun - and a great way to introduce grandkids to coin collecting. All of my grandchildren now have state quarter collections, and I have one for myself, just for kicks and grins. I will probably end up giving that one away too, eventually - but for now I like looking at the different designs for each state. I hope the new coins they are going to come out with will be just as interesting.

 

Thanks for the kind comments on my web site. I have a bunch of my extra world coins for sale there too. I'm just a collector trying to finance more purchases for my collection.
I like the new quarters too, mainly because of the new designs and affordability. U.S. coins became boring and too expensive pretty early on when I started collecting them as a kid.

 

Here is my catagory list. When I want to know anything specific I rearrange by date, prices, current value. Hope this helps. You are right it is tedious but you get to know your coins better and it is no different than coin inventory software as you still have to enter the appropriate data.

Give Exact Change by Wildman software a try. It is not free but they havea good program and the customer support is outstanding!!

The one downside I see is that I need to be using Windows to use it, but it allows for exporting the data to a spreadsheet, so I should be able to take it to another computer and modify if necessary, but I haven't had the opportunity to play around with it just yet.
