1893-CC Morgan, G-4 or G-6?

In terms of value, there's not much difference between G-4 and G-6.
With luck I'll be replacing it with a VF-30.
IF I win the VF, I'll send the Good in (probably to NGC) and am just interested in what I'll probably get.
I won't try to sell it without authentication.

Surfaces appear to be original and unmarked, just well worn.
    So, G-4 or G-6?

To me it is an AG3 - the rims are not full and that is required for a G grade.

While I agree with you on the grade, I bet PCGS will market grade this baby as a 6.

That's what I was thinking as well. I'll bet it will slab as a G4 because the TPGs are looser than the ANA standards...but it's not any higher than an AG3. Because it is an 1893, it might even slab as a G6...because of how the TPGs grade.

Would not surprise me. They allow flat rims for the G grade.

The coin appears to be a VAM-2 for the Date and Mint as well (i.e. CC Mintmark tilted right)!

    Bingo!

There's 2 very different things involved here.

    1) What grade is the coin? This appears to be an AG3 because, as Doug mentioned and as both references that I have (ANA Grading book and Q David Bowers' book on Morgans) say so. A G is supposed to have full rims, this coin does not have full rims. An AG is supposed to have the edge wearing into the legend, there's JUST a hint of this starting here.

Judgement call IMO. I'd personally rather stay safe and call it an AG3. How about a PQ AG3?

    2) What grade will a worthwhile TPG call the coin at? Now, as we all know, that has NOTHING to do with what grade the coin technically is :)

    Interesting comments.

    IMO it's a G-4.
One of the ANA Guide diagnostics of an AG-3 is that the rim on the reverse merges into the letters of the legend. This clearly doesn't happen here.
And I was thinking strictly technical grade.
I wasn't concerned with its VAM variety; didn't even think about it.
But the other comments about it making a G-6 because of it being a key date for CC's is interesting. I hadn't considered that either.
I assume that is what is known as "market grading".

the key dates are treated differently.

    So, I'll go G-6.

The coin is a G4 ,because the rims are still intact there not merging with the fields if you want to be technical, that's my grade.

    YaHoo!!!
    I got the VF-30.
And at what I consider a VERY good price (at most greysheet Bid).

I'll get my current one slabbed and then sell it.
    Probably at a show.
I'd really like to sell it on eBay (probably get a better price) but I don't want to deal with the garbage (real and potential) associated with that site.
