edited Where you got all that from me agreeing that a guy is a nutcase is beyond me. Have you even read the book? edited
I really am not in the mood to be playing games with someone of your obvious genius. edited Good Night
Yep. Now lets slowly back away from this thread. And I would love to hear why he is a nutcase (no harm intended) many considered some of the greatest philosophers and scientist of all time nutcases.
jon26 are you the author? What is the name of the book and do the sell it at barnes a noble, books-a-million, or borders?
Really? A friend of the author? Please dont be PO'ed at others comments. :smile So are you the author?
Wow! I'm nearly sorry I brought up the topic of the book. I have not researched others' opinions of the author, or the book. All I know is that I read it and found it to be scientifically sound, in my opinion. I majored in Chemistry in college, and found nothing objectionable about the author's work. I did find his stance of toning being equivalent to damage to be rather strong, but when I read his argument, I found also found it strong. Toning, when you look at it, really is a form of damage, beautiful damage as it may be.
Richie, His book is very good and a must read for any collector of toned coins. His views on toning are opposed to the general consensus of numismatics. Most people recognize that toning is the first step of corrosion and think that proper preservation is a reasonable solution to stop (slow dramatically) the toning process. White takes a hard line stance that toning is damage and should be removed by dipping the coin. When I said that I agree that he is a nutcase, I was alluding to the fact that his ideas on the topic are very unconventional and he is very opinionated on the subject. Regardless of the specific reasons why, my agreement with others assessments in no way justified the personal attack the ensued by jon26.
And when I'm wrong I will admit it. I misinterpreted some of the things being said and for that I apologize.
It is my turn. My comment about White was not explained or substantiated in anyway and practically invited a hostile response. My response to your comment was extremely rude and in very poor taste, for which I apologize. It is my hope that we can put this incident behind us and move on in a positive way on Cointalk that promotes friendship and the free sharing of information and ideas.
That's why many are opposed to his ideas. White's ideas about the toning process itself seem very sound. It's his views on "what to do next" that rub folks the wrong way. The notion to clean them with baking soda made me cringe. Yes, Lehigh... I think it's a good book. As Doug said earlier, don't take it as perfect. Particularly the baking soda thing !
