I found this mercury dime while searching through a bin of old coins that were given to me. It reminds me of a clipped planchet error, although I don't think that it is one. What do you guys think? Is this an error or just PMD?
I kind of figured that this was PMD, but I figured I should at least ask around because I hadn't seen anything like it. Thanks for the help.
DEFDAM - Definitely Damaged BTW.. Blank Planchets are not actually clipped. They are incomplete. They were punched to close to a prior planchet that was cut out of the sheet so there was nothing there to clip.
Thanks, I'm somewhat familiar with these but it's nothing like the OP's coin. I may have to find one of these errors as I don't have one.
First of all, a most hearty welcome to CT @BrennanL. It is really nice to see a younger person interested in collecting. You sound versed well enough about "clips" but if you haven't already checked out some of the sites, here a few. One of the best was posted by our own @physics-fan3.14 https://www.cointalk.com/threads/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-incomplete-planchet-error.77334/ http://www.error-ref.com https://www.australian-coins.com/error-coins/how-to-determine-if-a-clipped-planchet-error-is-real/ Your type would be an incomplete clip, but if you use a caliper to measure the coin, I think you'll find it is not completely round. If it was a true incomplete clip, the die collar would keep it round but if it was PMD, it would allow the metal to expand beyond the coins original diameter. Good luck in your endeavors.
