Most of my coins from the 20th Century up through the later years were found in circulation. And, my main collection is based upon eye appeal given to those that were found in circulation. I was looking at my Wheat Cents and found this 1918 with wood grain and nice toning. I hope I haven't shown it before - I don't think I have. Found in change in the way back days.
Much nicer than mine, @Inspector43 . I think I've run across your posts before. I can't say when I got my 1918, but it was probably out of circulation in the mid to late Fifties.
About the same time. I prefer coins from circulation. They have character and history. Show some of yours sometime.
I can't tell from your photo but can you still see traces of the "VDB"? I think that was the first year the initials returned? (But I'm not sure... have to check.)
@JeffC and others Yes it has the DVB. I must be getting bored. I am now going over my older sets. I like toned cents. Here is the 1919 from my Wheat Cent collection:
Thank you @Randy Abercrombie I think I prefer them to Mint State. Of course finding them in circulation makes a difference. As I collected as a youngster I would constantly upgrade with new finds. These two have made me re-focus. I seem to be getting bored because I have a very near complete collection of US coins from before 1900 and running out of stuff to do. I think I will go over my LWC's and try to build a set of toned Lincolns. Thanks for everyone's support and feedback.
That sounds like a fun project! Those are good looking LWCs! Keep us up on your progress when you can.
Thanks for the encouragement. I haven't looked close at my LWC's for a long time. Attached are the 1909 P VDB and the 1909 P. I am finding that most of my early LWC's have these same characteristics. Not real valuable but representative of what was in circulation when I was a kid. I don't think I would want to trade or upgrade any of them.
I just retrieved my Whitman volume 1 and found that the hinges are just about shot. If I open it again to take a snapshot I might just tear the first segment of the folder away from the other two. My 1918 would be a great find today—probably rate a G+ but not VG. I'm still without the two important 1909 issues as well as the 14-D, so my set of Wheat Lincolns is incomplete.
Great. I am without 09 S, 09 S VDB, 14 D, 22 w/o D and 31 S. Like I've said, my sets are from circulation and I never did find one of those. My IHC Whitman is from the 1940's and covered in Scotch Tape.
Here are a couple more from my found in circulation folder. A 1930 P and a 1930 D. I hope I am not over staying my welcome. I love these coins and want to share them.
Those are excellent. Wish I could find that quality in circulation now. I would say the 30 and 30-D are AU.
Thanks, I appreciate that. 60 years ago I was 17. So this would probably been found before that. I spent a lot of time in the bank vault rolling change for the tellers. With that I had access to some nice coins. The tellers had to hand roll the coins. I was a friend and they held nice stuff if they found it. Rules were different then. Everyone was trusted until you proved that you were untrustworthy.
