They look really nice. I think the 2x2's are very dated. I am going to put them in air tites..maybe a nice acetone bath. what do you think.... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3970394353&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWN:IT&rd=1 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3970394943&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWN:IT&rd=1
If you do a Acetone bath make sure you don't pat them with a paper-towel or a Kleene-X or Q-tip or such. It will leave marks....as for the grades...I would want better photos.... Speedy
Why the acetone ? I see nothing on the coins to indicate it needs it The '42 - MS63 The '44 - MS64 Nice coins
Looks like it's gonna hit around AU for the first one, after looking at the reverse, you can see on the eagles breast some wear, and quite a bit on the eagles leg. I'd go with a slider.... The second one deffinatley looks MS, although I can't tell if that's a scratch on the obverse at 2:00 - 3:00.
I don't think so, not from the ones I've viewed locally. Generally the ones i've seen that have had a weak strike or were produced during the last of the dies shown the weaker areas being on the wings and the upper right area. Dunno though, could be a weak strike.
Nice coins! Acetone Bath!!!! I was always told that cleaning coins takes away from their value. I heard that many grading services either return cleaned coins, give a lwer grade, or mark "cleaned" on the case. What is the general opinion.
I have heard that acetone will only loosen "residue" maybe left by old album holders or old 2x2's. its mild enough not to harm the coin. I have some microfiber cloths and just place them on to air dry and the difference is amazing. tried with a 63 frankiln and the difference was dramatic. Anyone please correct me if I am wrong.
The photos show both these pieces as nice BU coins. Can't get any more specific than that with these pics. One does appear to have a boo-boo in the obverse field on the right. You probably got them at a decent price. His feedback is fairly excellent, folks are real happy with the coins he sells. I've added him to my FAVORITES list, awaiting your comments on your coins when you get them. Maybe some better pics...??
There are many who advocate dipping silver coins in acetone - personally I do not unless the coin has PVC residue on it. Over the last 45 years I have seen collectors, even very knowledgeable advanced collectors, do just about everything you can think of to coins. And in just about every case, when the particular proceedure was popular - it was always deemed harmless if not even good for the coins. These proceedures have included coating the coins with lacquer, any number of various dip products, storing them in the soft plastic flips, using toothpaste to clean them - you name it - they've done it. And today - all of those things are considered anathema by collectors - worse than killing women and children. Today it is acetone. I'll pass thanks
