I'm interested in joining either PCGS or NGC so I can get a number of coins graded and have access to future grading. My question is, aside from the joining fee (as low as $39 on each of those sites) and the stated fee to grade coins (as low as $15 for an economy service), what other fees apply?

    Shipping and handling?
    Insurance?
    Is insurance optional?
    Other fees?

Give me an example of what it would cost to send in 5 coins worth about $100 each for economy service.

    Thanks in advance.

At PCGS the fees are as follows:

    5 coins economy tier ( Under $300 value ) @ $18 per =$90
    submission fee $5 per tier
registered return shipping...$18.50 ( this varies with # of coins and value)
shipping registered TO PCGS ( they only accept registered ) $12 or so

    $90
    $5
    $18.50
    $12
    _______
    $125.50 or $25.10 per coin

Actually PCGS now shows that they accept Express Mail. Much nicer service than Registered. You don't need the special tape for all of the seams. Their online submission form also indicates that FedEx is acceptable.

PCGS does NOT require Registered Mail. I thrown many coins in padded mailers and sent them off to them.

None of the TPG require Registered. They recommend it, but it is not required.

On line 12 on the reverse of the submission form, it says ship registered/insured or USPS express, so yes, I was wrong. I have never sent it any other way than registered myself.....

How do you protect your coins. I read somewhere you cannot staple or tape 2x2's or flips. I really only have two coins to submit: A 1999 wide A M, and a 1994 165* CCW die rotated Licoln cent. Both in AU condition, at least.----zg

    Hello PeaceJoeMorgan,

If you are not already a member of the ANA, then consider joining. I believe that ANA members can submit to NGC with no additional sign-up fee.

    Very best regards,

When mailing, I put them in the crown size flips and then put all those flips in a ziplock bag. Then wrap the bag around itself and tape closed. This works for 2 coins or 75 coins. Never had a problem doing it this way.
