I'm looking to buy a 1914 D raw cent off eBay, it is a key date. Is it altered? I really need your help. Here are the photos.[IMG]

    I agree, it was originally a 1944-D.

Definetly altered IMHO, 110%. I'd steer clear. Could you post a link to the auction so it can get reported?

Altered. It's worth paying the premium for a graded and authenticated example.

Altered 1944-D. (Look for VDB on truncation of Lincoln's bust. Sometimes this is removed.)

Is anybody planning to bump this thread in 6 or 8 years?

Ill make a mental note and will try my very best to remember.

I would like to say this is part of why this forum is awesome. Plenty of very knowledgable members who are more than willing to share their knowledge and help out those who dont know quite as much. Id also like to point out that the spacing between the 9 and the 1 is what makes this coin so obvious to detect the altered date.

Bingo. Altered date. No brainer, actually. The 1914-D is much more evenly spaced when real:

If you see a 1914-D (or other similar dates) with the date spaced like "19 14" you're looking at a fake coin.

Said slightly differently, the second 1 in 1914 should be equally spaced from the right edge of the 9 and the left edge of the 4 -- if it isn't, beware.

If you need help to determine the authenticity of a coin - including such an obviously altered coin like this example - them you should not be buying raw coins in person much less off eBay.

Spend the money instead on a book on counterfeit detection.

Uggggh, this is a horrible attempt at making a 14 D out of a 44D. I hope the guy selling it isn't trying to hoodwink anyone, you never know, he could be as clueless as all us when we first started collecting.

Were you serious. The gouges where they changed the date is easily seen. Please don't buy it unless you like altered 44 d cents
