This coin is about the size of a dollar or British penny. Year is 1801 with a D mintmark. I can read Ferdinand and Sicily, possibly also Spain. Can you help me figure out what it is?
it's actually a P. and not a mintmark. 1801, 6 Tornesi - Ferdinando IV Country: Kingdom of Naples (Italian states) Type: Standard circulation coin Years 1799-1803 Value 6 Tornesi = 3 Grano = 1/40 Piastra (1/40) Currency Piastra (1266-1812) Composition Copper Weight 18.71 g Diameter 34 mm Shape Round Orientation Coin alignment ↑↓ Demonetized: Yes References: KM# 229, MIR# 426 Obverse Head right of King Ferdinand IV, with long hairs Lettering: FERDINAN·IV·SICIL·ET HIE·REX P· Reverse Value is in three lines, date below in exergue. I have an 1801 Naples 6 tornesi that looks almost identical to me (right coin). Nothing in my catalog under Sicily itself looks quite as close to me.
Why do you think so? It seems to match the Naples 6 tornesi, and now that I'm looking I can see the "NE" on the front of "Tornesi".
