Right; here is some brief information (from http://europa.eu.int/scadplus/leg/en/lvb/l25040.htm, scroll down a little to "SITUATION BEFORE THE INTRODUCTION OF THE EURO") about the pre-euro agreements: "Italy also has particular monetary links with the Vatican that are based on an agreement whereby coins issued by Italy were legal tender in the Vatican. Notes issued by the Bank of Italy were not legal tender but, in practice, circulated on Vatican territory. Coins other than gold coins issued by the Vatican had the same shape, size and composition as coins circulating in Italy. The agreement limited the number of such coins that could be issued; these were legal tender in the Vatican and in Italy." So the limitations were similar to what we have today. But the text does not provide any mintage figures concerning the old IT/VA monetary agreement. Christian
Found 'em These are the pre-euro limits: (3) An earlier Monetary Convention between the Vatican City State and the Italian Republic allowed the former to issue lira coins for a maximum annual face value of ITL 1 billion subject to a maximum annual number of 100 million coins(4). (4) The earlier Monetary Convention also allowed the Vatican City State to mint additional lira coins for a total of ITL 300 million and, subject to a maximum number of 30 million coins, under three special circumstances, namely, in the year when the Holy See becomes vacant, in each Jubilee Year and in the year of the opening of an Ecumenical Council. http://europa.eu.int/eur-lex/lex/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=CELEX:32003D0738:EN:HTML Christian
According to sources in the media [other websites], there is going to be a full euro sede vacente set issued. Pope Watzizface coins will not come out in a standard format until next year. You can't afford them.
Great!! I just now got my 2005 Pope Johnnie 2 order form, and now I have to fight for the new ones. I still say they should just issue ONE denomination and make millions of them. I know they issued Vacant Seat stamps, and just today I sent the Vatican Post Office a request to have some envelopes mailed to me with these special stamps (only valid for the time between Popes). Would love to get some Vacant Seat coins also.
What do you mean with you just got your 2005 order form? I am interested in buying Vatican coin sets. How does one go about ordering them directly from vatican city? Is this what you meant by your comment? Also, since you also got us started on the stamps, how do you get the Vatican post office to mail you back enveloped with SEDE VACANTE stamps? Thanks, in advance for your help!
As a registered customer of the UFN (Philatelic and Numismatic Office of the Vatican) you get an order form when they issue new coins. You fill it out, send it back and hope for the best ;-) Problem is, they have many requests especially these days. I don't think you can get on their mailing list at this time, but why not try it out ... Sede Vacante MMV Stamps - Vatican It is almost impossible at this time to get the Sede Vacante stamps if you are not in Rome. At the 2 Post Office of the City, every moring there is a very large amount of people in line. The Philatelic and Numismatic Office of the Vatican is in a state of 'shock' for now to answer all the request. I'm living in Rome and was able to get a few sheets of the Sede Vacante stamps. There is 3 values: 0,60 Euros - 0,62 Euros and 0,80 Euros. A sheet as 10 stamps. So, if there is real collectors in your group, I would be happy to help some of you: some means a few. Sorry for my english, this is not my first language. Daniel
Daniel, Do you still have some sheets left? Iam interested in buying some from you. Please let me know how much you want per sheet. Thank you Pieter
Guess the Sede Vacante stamps are not valid any more ... The Roman Catholic Church has a new Pope, and the Vatican City State has a new head of state: Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (78) is Pope Benedict XVI now. Christian
HABEMUS PAPAM! Great. I just hope my friend mailed me the post card in time. LOL Can't wait to beging collecting those Benedict XVI coins!!!
Good luck. There'll thousands of hardcore collectors from Germany now giving you hard time. Start saving some money
Yes. First, the Vatican City State has since its foundation in 1929 always issued such pieces. And also ... http://www.vatican.va/vatican_city_..._numismatiche_2005/inglese/n2005lista_en.html (see "Next Issues", #1) What we do not know yet is the face value and the details of the design. Christian
Da nicht für As for that auction, wow, somebody was really quick ... A couple of days ago I saw a similar piece with John Paul II and a somewhat misleading description: http://www.morganmint.com/product.cfm?Prod=2390&Link=28&source=pope_comm Both of the Pope John Paul II commemorative coins were struck by the U.S. Mint under Acts of the U.S. Congress and are official legal tender in the United States. Ha! Oh, and I agree, the German collectors will be after Benedict XVI coins. This year, for example, the Vatican will issue a €2 commem dedicated to the World Youth Day in Cologne - and it is very likely that Ratzinger will be there ... Christian
Those coins will all be very rare and expensive, because the Vatican is only aloud to make a few thousand sets. There are NO Benedict XV coins at all....
Where would they have minted them? It wasn't until 1929 that the Vatican recognized the Kingdom of Italy as a country. Throughout Benedict XV's papacy, the Pope considered himself a "prisoner" in St. Peter's. The 1929 Lateran Treaty established the Italian Mint as the makers of Vatican coins.
Exactly. B-15 and Leo XIII were the only popes [who lasted more than a few weeks] not to issue coins since the discovery of America in 1492. I've read somewhere that L-13 had some patterns made by a private mint.
I’m sure glad Columbus discovered America in 1492 – until then the poor Indians/Native Americans had no idea where they had been all those centuries!!
Actually, Columbus discovered America in 1497, when he landed in what is now Venuzuela and came to the realization that there was "A new continent unknown to the Ancients." Nobody in the world knew there were two continents between Europe and East Asia heading west. Back on topic, the first B-16 coins are due later this year, three previously announced commems are having a change of obverse.
