Notice how the loop of your R goes up on the left side , on the picture in the book it goes straight across , I'll PM a couple of people good on counterfeits for help . rzage
I'm not familiar with the diagnostics for this coin so I really can't say one way or the other. If this coin is a fake it is a good one.
Wow. I have both of those references. I'm double-checking them as we chat. I do see the rabbit ears, coin in hand, but I have a problem with the date, now. Mine follows the rim, but it's supposed to slant upward from left to right. That's not possible, given the single obverse die used. I hate to admit when I'm wrong, because I consider myself quite a good numismatist. That being said, I think I screwed this one up. Thanks so much for your help. I'm going to investigate further. I hope I'm not in violation of CoinTalk rules, but...DAMMIT!
i was just looking at other slabs it was just my opinion i thought looked genuine not official though thanks.
Thanks for the support. I've already contacted the gentleman I purchased it from. He seems cooperative. I am very concerned about the authenticity at this point. The seller is going to talk to the person he bought it from tomorrow, and he'll let me know what he wants to do. Oy! This is embarrassing. I have been in this game for a very long time. I broke several of my own rules: 1) I bought this coin sight-unseen. 2) I purchased from a seller with whom I had not previously done business. 3) I only checked a few diagnostics, not all of them. Fortunately, what I have working in my favor is that the seller seems genuine and seems willing to work with me. Only time will tell.
I thought the date looked odd. Borgovan, is it in an older ANACS holder? I got burned on a fake 1877CC trade dollar in a fake, older holder.
No, it's in a newer holder. I think the holder may be genuine, and the coin was replaced. There is a break in the seam of the slab.
According to Bill Fivaz the number 1 in the date should be centered directly over a denticle. Also check the top part of the 3 for doubling....alot of fakes are added mintmarks to 1893-P's, and most of them have doubling on the 3. I think I see the "rabbit ear" on your coin, but the rest of the letter R looks off to me. The T for the most part looks correct. The photos I'm looking at shows a very bold, and stright middle bar in the letter R. Your's looks weaker, and slanted. BTW--I'm looking at the PCGS guide, and also Bill Fivaz's Counterfeit Detection Guide. Speedy
Thanks for the tips. I have the PCGS guide as well. I've already determined with certainty that this coin is counterfeit, because of the misalignment of the date. This is not possible with the single obverse die that is used. The rabbit ear is there. The date is perfectly aligned with the denticles -- that's why I was fooled initially. Scary.
