What is your opinion of this coin? Remember that this is a 20's mm and typically weak strike. The first pics are mine. For some reason the color is a little flat for the obverse (pic, not the coin). The second set of pics are the sellers.

Nice coin Rim....I like the sellers pics best. Are you satisfied? What I mean to say is that do the sellers pics do the coin justice?

Alright, I'll jump in first. AU-58....looks like some wear on the wheat ears to me. Let's see what the more enlightened think.

They probably bless it little, but they are pretty close.

Very nice coin!! They say the 25-S vies with the 25-D for the worst made coin in the series, but this is a decent example IMHO. Where it does not have the best of strikes, it is above average I believe for the 25-S. I'd say MS-64 R, but I would not be surprised at all if it is in a 65 R holder, or would make 65 R.

Au 58 by the first pic (looks like some wear on cheek area) MS 64 by the second pic

65 RED? I think I have some nice Lincolns, but the last one Heritage sold went for $27,600. All I can do is dream about that coin!

Boy I'm torn with the two sets of pics. Your pics make it appear that it has some light wear, the seller's pics make it appear that it does not. That said I'm gonna go with your pics as I feel they are likely to be more honest to the coin and say 58.

Lol, I was thinking about that in my head. I didn't know how much though they were going for in that grade, (as I don't follow those prices), so I took a stab. So, in saying that I'll say MS-63 Red all in all. (Those nicks on the face are saddening, but still it is a nice coin IMHO).

I Like the look of the coin and both sets of pics really help me grade it more accurately. The coin looks like typical of the San Francisco mint during the 20's in so much as I see a lot of mushiness in the features especially on the cheek bone. Some would interpret it as wear but its not since there are no breaks in the luster on either set of pics. I would call it a mid MS coin probably MS63 or 64 depending on who was grading it that day. Not a bad find all in all.

[IMG] By the second picture, i would say MS63-64RD the coin has a nice strike, no wear on the focal areas cheek or Wheat stalks clean. nice coin indeed

I know the grade of course, but I say this, the seller pics hid the cheekbone dingers pretty well, and made the coin look super premium.

I think a balance of the 2 pics works well.....it is a " nice " coin for the grade and worth the price paid. Not as " primo " as I first thought now that I have a better look at the cheekbone. For the issue, it still stands above the norm.

    You did well.

EDIT: Rlm, the scratch across the forehead we discussed before purchase has disappeared in your pics, that was the main concern at the time. Whats you opinion of that? Was it plastic? Lighting? That scratch means everything to the value of this coin, combined with the cheek, it is a " dealbreaker " +/- you must figure in.

Since you said the sellers pics pretty much represent the coin I'll say MS-63 RB . Just a guess mind you . still a killer coin .

How much toning does a Lincoln need to be considered RB ?

5% Rusty, a Lincoln needs to be 95% red to get the RD on the slab.

Rlm just got a 29-D back as a RB that blew me away. It's a solid red coin. Per my grade guarantee thread, PCGS is messing with market pricing and values, and assigning grades according to price, not grades like they are supposed to.

On the OP coin, I agree 100% with the grade whicjh I will not disclose, but man, they are making it tough to guess at times. Even a well educated guess. I will bounce this back to Doug, what were THEY thinking? I KNOW what I'm thinking, lol.

Nice coin. The grade varies each time it exchanges hands no matter what the artificial holder says.

Jack I always preferred PCGS over NGC because they burned me once awhile back , would you send your coins to Ngc or PCGS ?

The "scratch" is none of the above. I think it is a die break, but it is very faint and could be a strike through or planchet flaw.

Wow Dick, Very nice coin! That is stellar! 63 or 64 I say. Definitely not a 65 because of the dings on the cheek and the scratch on the reverse under the left stalk. Nice coin!

    Question:
what are the rules about weak strikes and MS grades?
