Same "open mouth" look with the Classic Head $5s of 1834-1838. A peculiar "hooked" upper lip. ...though I don't think anyone will say "she looks hot". These are not the most attractive coins we ever made. http://coinfacts.com/half_eagles/classic_head_half_eagles/classic_head_half_eagle.html
She's taking a deep breath after the WAR she'd just witnessed. I think she is the classiest Lady Liberty we've had so far. Bruce
That's what I was thinking, possibly some symbolism of relief. But I disagree with the statement that it was done to typify the women of the time period, I don't think that any sane mint would accept a design that is based on the "flapper" type girls to represent society's unique ways at the time. They had to have had something else in mind.
.........she sorta looks like she just heard some juicy gossip!! .........she certainly looks foxy to me!!
I think it is a rather elegant design. I never noticed the mouth thing though, until now! This series deserves more attention than it is recieving. It is way prettier than the Morgans and easier to attain, yet not near the attention. Am I missing something?
Gasping for air, she just let one fly. or just how long do you really think a woman can keep the trap shut? artist probably figured that this is the more realistic profile.
Of course the subject was the artists wife. He did a nice job of portraying her vignette for the coin.
I have always thought that the obverse of the Peace dollar was one of the ugliest designs for US coins. The muddled design makes Liberty appear to be frightened or have lower intelligence. Perhaps, the intelligence left through her open mouth.
no way, there is nothing unintelligent about her look. If everyone looks unintelligent when they take a breath, then why even worry about it? If you're going to say that she looks unintelligent, I wonder what you'd say about some of the other designs we've had in the past...is the seated Liberty lazy?
I don't think she looks unintelligent at all. Beautiful and hot is her compared to other Miss Libertys. The reverse is very unique with what it is representing. But, after saying the it is a good thing we don't all like and want to collect the same coins.
