    In addition to a worn die IMO the coin was damaged by some type of chemical or acidic environment.

    I think the grainy look of the coin is due to camera issues

    Yes, it merely looks like a low-resolution photo to me.

    Don't get your hopes up, but there appears to be a die chip in front the eye. Try to get very clear close-up of eye.

    After a closer look at the 1956D the doubling is starting to look suspicious to me especially the 5 there is a rotation to the doubling and is raised and rounded more I don't normally see form with DDD and usually the whole thing is deteriorated this seems to be localized to the date and mintmark any ideas.

    Remember Dates and MintMarks are different. MintMarks pre 1989, were hand stamped on the dies. Thus if you see a correlated effect on both the Date and MintMark it is normally not due to a Doubled Die .... it's due to wear, mechanical doubling, etc of some type.
