This question pertains to UNC State quarters series. If you were collecting these and you had a choice between a state quarter with mirrored fields or one with frosty fields, which one would you choose and why?
Tough choice... I assume you are comparing proof vs. uncirculated. I have a very slight preference toward uncirculated.
Actually, they are both unc. They are both from us mint unc sets. I always keep one set and break apart the other for my albums. One set I have has deep mirror fields and the other one I have has frosty fields. Also would like to know at what stage was each die when it stamped the coins or can you even tell. I am trying to think how this concept applies to Morgan dollars.
"which one would you choose and why?" Whichever one appealed more TO ME because I buy coins because I like them.
p.s. To really answer your question: Most business struck prooflike moderns don't appeal to me -- primarily because proofs of such high quality are readily available. I'd probably choose the non-prooflike example unless the prooflike one was a real stunner.
always frosty for all proofs. Mirrored proofs should be discounted and given only to truly tacky pack rats, weird cheapskates and those lacking a sound mind. (send one to Charles Manson, he'd like it when he's out on parole in three years).
Ok, here is another thing that I noticed.... the quarters that are frosty have weak and often flat letters whereas the mirrored uncs have strong letters. Here is some more info..... the frosty looking quarters came from a special mint set that celebrated the first 13 colonies. The set had both P & D quarters for 2000 and 2001. There may have been even a few 2002. The mirrored uncs came from a us mint unc set. I wonder if the special mint set used business strikes and the mint sets received the better struck coins meant for unc sets?
I would choose the mirror instead of frosty. The proof like coins are the first strikes that's why they are high in relief . I put every coin i come across That has a Proof like surface I have a 2000 nickle p I could swear its a Proof i compared it to an s Mint and the mirror like image are so close . I would like to, post that coin but it won't show up like a proof in the pics Now pertaining to the question i like the mirror like surfaces better then Mr frosty ,because the strike is great and the coin just glows/ Jazzcoins Joe
Well fortunately, I agree with Joe... thats the other Joe of course. I did chose the mirror field over the frosty field. Personally, I like the frosty field better, but the mirrored field had a much stronger strike. Everything was raised much better. It was like night and day when you compare the strikes. Although I like the frosty ones better, I had to go with the stronger strikes for my book, with the exception for one or two that I did chose because they looked so sweet.
Send them to me and I'll do a study , then I'll let you know . rzage:hatch::hammer: The PL one .
