I found this in a river. Silver, weighs 6.25 grams, diameter 24.11mm, thickness 1.56mm. It has die chip errors, the date was stamped 3 times, the mint mark is not glued on but yet doesn't sit in a depression. Could that be another error? Is the coin real or fake?
I'd say it's a fake from the pictures but take it to a coin shop or two and get a couple in person opinion's before spending money on authentication and, the only way you are going to get decent value for it is having it certified. There's a whole lot of fakes out there. Date and mint mark look wrong on it as if theyve been worked. It's likely a silver quarter, might even be a 1932D that someone worked on heavily trying to make it better and ruined it... There's a lot that looks wrong here to me.
Well I'm no expert on quarters but it appears to me to be real, it has DDD also die chips I don't see any reason for this coin to be faked. Jmo
Muzzman, were you the one to clean it to see it's details after it was in the river for a while? The 2 looks different but i'm really a novice. This pic of another 32D is from usacoins. Nice find!
If it were to be faked, what original date quarter would they use, or does it look like the date was ground off and the 3 and 2 were added? The D on the back is also suspect like the PO mentioned..
My thought is they trimmed a 1932 quarter on the 32 and used the extra metal to make the D on the reverse. But that's specualtion. Like I said there is so much wrong here I cant confirm it's legit so I have to call it a fake.
Another clue/red flag would be look at the toning on the date....it was left there to hide either the grinding of the 32 or the glue where the 32 was added.
No I didn't do anything with it. Cleaning coins hurts the value of them. It would be a good find if it's real. Thanks. Yeah the 2 looks different but I don't know if it's because of it being struck 3 times. That's why I'm here with it. I took it to a place and they looked it over and said nice find. A key date and offered to buy it. I told them that I wasn't ready to sell it not knowing anything about it.
Even without looking at the date you can tell it isn't a 1932, Compare the IGWT to the real 32 posted by spirityoda. Note the strength of the motto and the height of the center point of the W.
The "32" in the date is all wrong. I agree with @Treashunt that it is probably a real silver quarter, but the date was crudely altered.
Still, quite an interesting river find. Neat conversation piece. Bad fake, but interesting in spite of that. And in some ways, because of that.
