Sure – me ! I’ve thought about this a little more, and I realized that there are two definitions of “uncirculated” in numismatics. One describes the history; that is, whether the coin has been put in “circulation”. The other describes a condition. When it is used as a condition, it is synonymous with “mint state” (excluding proofs). It’s the second definition that is problematic because it is ambiguous with the first definition. That is, a circulated (history) coin can be uncirculated (condition). “Mint state” would almost be an acceptable substitution, except that as it is used numismatically it typically excludes proofs. Better choices might be “pristine”, “unworn”, “full metal”, or some such. However, “uncirculated” is used numismatically for condition. But, not without disagreement, and I don’t think there is one right or wrong here. One of the other forums has some debate on just this issue. Just my About Good two cents.
