So I work for starbucks, and I was processing tips the other week at the bank...and the coin machine (not coinstar..this one gives you all the money) spit this penny out. Naturally I bought it out of the tip fund with a penny of my own. Its 2001, the date is visible. Anyone know what this thing is worth?
What you have is an Off-Center Cent. Yes, it is collectable. No, you won't be able to retire when you sell it. I am not an expert on errors but it is probably worth several dollars. Is the entire date visible? If so, it may be worth a bit more. Good eye. That's a nice find. Keep looking. And welcome to CoinTalk.
Thanks! Yes, the whole date is visible, and I know its not priceless, only like 5-10$ but hey..for finding a penny..thats not bad. We get all kinds of weird coins in our tips, most of them that get rejected are foreign currencies..canadian seems to be the most popular in my area.
Off center strike. Yours has the complete date which is worth more. From the first pic it looks like the planchet has a rim which makes it worth more. I'd guess about $15.
It's a shame, because an error like this, had I not been a collector, would strike me as extremely valuable. ( Are there too many comma's in that sentence?)
Are you talking about the raised rim on the unstruck portion of the planchet? I would be surprised if the raised rim was NOT there.
Thx thanks guys! I will sell it, but I need to wait until I have posting privileges in the auction section. I really appreciate everyone's posts here. I will need to post more of the random stuff we find in the tip jar.... I will have an update in a new thread asap for you guys, I found some strange stuff when I did tips yesterday..nothing as special as this penny, but def. worth mentioning!
