Some stuff showed up for me from the ANA on Saturday. As I was supposed to get my 25-year pin at the show and there was no show, they mailed that. There was also a small silver medal with my name and membership number engraved on it. They also sent a thank you gift for giving the Morgan dollar webinar. As you may or may not know, Dan "Tiny" Cross passed away earlier this year. Tiny was a larger than life persona at the ANA Summer Seminar, did immeasurable stuff for the YNs in attendance, and was an avid Hobo nickel carver and collector. Joe Paonessa, who teaches the Hobo nickel class and designs an annual summer seminar token, produced a run of "Tiny" nickels. They're overstruck on dateless buffalo nickels, so I guess they can officially still count as Hobo nickels? Anyway, I thought this was very cool and a fitting tribute token to Tiny.
That Tiny nickel is really cool. I talked to him several times when I attended summer seminar on a scholarship while in my mid teens. Very nice guy and made an impact on a lot of people. Thats a cool tribute.
This is the first I'm hearing that Tiny passed. Wow. He will be dearly missed, his impact for the hobby was incredible...
Thanks for sharing @messydesk. That is indeed a fitting tribute to Tiny that Joe Ponessa produced. I've talked to Tiny many times over the years at the Summer Seminars and also when he would come to the local show in Kansas City and set up for the benefit of the YNs.
I doubt it, as they were made specifically for the instructors this year. I imagine that the obverse would have been used on this year's summer seminar pewter banquet tokens. The ANA could probably raise a lot of money for YN scholarships by giving these away as donation premiums, but there's the whole issue of how appropriate it would be to do that.
I would consider it pretty appropriate and imagine that Tiny would approve. I imagine it would be an honor that a friend would want something in memory of Tiny, so would donate because of that and that Tiny would have approved of the cause (YN Scholarships).
