If you are really asking the rarest and not the highest priced, It is the 1909 VDB Matte Proof @ 420 coins. All of the proofs from 1909-1916 are each less than 3000, and who knows about the 1917 "proof".

in comparison, the 1909SVDB was 484,000 and the 1914-D 1.1million.

However , supply and demand , generally leaves out the early proofs.

I haven't even looked at them yet. Even if I don't find anything of great value...it still fun treasure hunting.:)

I would think it would be the 55 double die also. ( *The king of the double dies)

The rarest of all Lincoln cents is the 1926-S in MS-65 Red, there are only 2 certified by PCGS.

Sorry, Jack. There has only been one certified by PCGS. The other was an NGC. Also, there are several others with just one certified (i.e. 1919- MS69).

I would say that the rarest is the 1944-S steel cent. If the fact that it is the highest price (it just sold for $350,000) is not enough, then the fact that there is only one know in any condition should suffice.

How about one that only half exists? Such as a 1959 wheat? There's a controversial cent that's out there somewhere and no one knows if its a genuine wheat, or a splice of two coins together.
I do believe it was authenticated at one point by someone, and then un-authenticated, and now it's up in the air.

I agree with that 1944-S Steel cent. At least, that's the rarest in my eyes (and the cent I would want more than any other).

One "hobby" (for lack of a better word) of mine is saving images of dream coins. Not only coins I could never hope to own, but also coins that serve as excellent examples of a coin I'd like to have. Although I could never hope to own either of the coins you mentioned...I do have pictures saved of them (and no, I don't think this is weird). So, I thought I would share them.

Depends on what you define as rare. And it depends on do you mean rare mintage wise, strike wise, etc. Mintage wise is would be the 09-S VDB. Error wise would be the 44-S that RLM posted about (of which I learned of it's rarity when I read his post, lol. That is one beautiful coin!!). Strike wise, there is a good bit of controversy on which coin is the hardest to find well struck, but it is one of the S mints from the twenties IMHO. Which one? That's a matter of opinion, IMO, lol. ;) I think this covers it really, I think I might have missed an area however?

Non variety/error, I always thought that aside from the '09-s VDB the 1931-S has the lowest mintage.
    Or I could be wrong..

Of the published mintages, you are correct. But what do you do with the 1922 plain and the 1955 D/D. They are generally recognized as part of the set. When you have that figured out, what about conditional rarities?

Thats true. Wheatbacks are complicated. So many varieties, errors etc.
