Trade dollars are one of my weak spots, and I am about 90% sure this one is genuine. It weighs 416 grains, which I assume is due to wear, and it tests correctly in my X-Ray Spectrometer, so weight and metals are correct. I just don't want to resell it unless I am 100% sure it is genuine. Thanks in advance.
Nothing says fake that I can see but it has a ton of bag marks. I also see a number of spots on the coin, all in low places. The coin is too white or shiny so add in the black spots and the bag marks and I'd say she's been cleaned. I'd pass and find another one.
Are there a lot of fake Trade Dollars out there? I have just one, but believe it to be genuine. Regrets for the crappy photos . . . . . Z
Yes there are. Trade Dollars were made specifically for use in foreign markets like the Orient. They have been highly faked and even the chop marks on them have been faked. Be cautious with them.
Don't mean to be snarky, but is that a grade of F-16 written at the lower right of the flip? Probably just a inventory number but I got a chuckle when I saw it.
Any time I see hand written grades (full numbers, not like XF or BU) on flips and 2 x 2's it makes me laugh.
It's one of the most faked coins there is. So yes there's a lot of fakes out there. As for the coin in the 2x2 holder, how can there be so much wear and yet LIBERTY is clear as day?
I've rarely seen fakes of common date trade dollars with a lot of wear; usually they have xf or higher details. Now, CC's, that's a whole different matter.
