Need some help getting this one shut down http://cgi.ebay.com/2008-W-VAN-BURE...5|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318|301:1|293:1|294:50 He's got a clearly photoshopped image, his first post even said it was a 2007-W! I've seen this guy run scams before. I tried buying a Jackson's Liberty from him which he informed me was "no longer available" but offered me an inferior coin instead at the same price. He left the auction up on eBay for over 2 weeks even though he had told me the coin was already sold.
Dman, I actually see no problem with this. He is doing a presale for a coin that he does not have in hand so he photoshopped a PCGS slab. The only thing with these types of auctions is that he has a time frame to provide the coin as specified (I believe it is 30 days) or the auction is null and void. Basically he is assuming that he will have in his hand a PCGS MS70/PR70 coin by the end of the required time frame. This type of auction was actually very common during the first year of the first spouse coins when they were highly collected. You will see these types of auctions for most newly released coins from the mint. Maybe others will have some more info.
And they generally include photoshopped images? What's the point of having images if I'm allowed to post fake ones?
Yeah, I gotta admit, I have never seen a photo shopped pic, but I don't think that it is illegal or wrong unless the advertising was intentionally misleading.
Dman, don't waste your money. Unless you are trying to put together a registry set, there is no reason to waste your money on a 70 slab. You are already wasting your money by sending it to the mint. Odds are very good that you will get a 70 or 69 if you purchase directly from the mint and if you are still wanting it slabbed, it would be cheaper to send it in yourself than to buy one.
I don't completely agree with that. With many of these newer mint issues, the quality control is very good but not good enough to ensure that all coins are 69+. They do produce a lot of 70s however. There are so many that the premium for a 70 is not a lot greater than a 69 and therefore many feel it is worth it. I typically can't see a difference...so I'd buy a 69 because they are slightly cheaper. But, the chances of buying one from the mint and getting it slabbed as a 70 isn't as good as most think. So, if you really want a 70, buy one already slabbed because for these coins I doubt the premium is that much.
Sorry for the confusion, no I wouldn't be buying this. I was just looking through the coins on eBay. I don't own a singlle graded coin actually. For modern coins, I much prefer to have them in govt packaging personally. I just happened to notice a Van Buren's Liberty going for $900 and wondered why considering it wasn't even released yet,, then realized what was going on.
No problem Dman. I remember you telling me that you wanted to collect these coins in the OGP. I hope you have been having some good luck putting the set together.
I've gotten a Washington, Jefferson, and Madison so far... at that point my credit card began to melt so I decided to give it a brief rest until after Christmas
I will add that the possibility of receiving a 69/70 grade coin (in this series) directly from the mint isn't as remote as some might lead you to believe.....
