So, how does one know which of the "offers" received, are good or bad? I bought some coins from Lear Capital to give away, now I'm wondering if I made a mistake.

Entities like that seem Criminal. As the old saying goes there ought to be a law.

There is not much that can be done about disreputable merchants of any sort. If I buy coins it is because I am interested in the pictures, as I rarely visit coin dealers' shops. I have a lot of old coins, but like most peoples' sets, they are to be graded "BU" which rather than "brilliant uncirculated", means "beat up"!

All of these comments and it sure is a terrible situation. When I think of rip off companies similar to these dealing coins, I can't help but think of Publishers Clearing House. They prey on mostly older clientele whose goal is to try to leave something behind of value for their family. The thinking being if I buy this steak knife set or automatic night light, etc. they will increase their odds of winning millions of $$$. The old saying "let the buyer beware" rings true when you are dealing with snake oil salesmen.

Personally, when the TV shows are boring, I enjoy propping up in bed w/ my iPad™ and tuning in to Rick Tomaska's coin show.
When he quotes a price for what he's currently 'hawking' I then look up the prices on-line to compare the difference.
( Egad, what a sad life I live)

@Christina WEary ...google them and go to their website and judge for yourself. I did. They have many references to “tribute”, have a bunch of overpriced coin sets, use phrases like “first strike” (just like on TV) and feature many colorized coins for outrageous prices. And this is in only their coin section.

IMHO they are “one of those outfits” ...Spark

I think the answer is basically "Yes", but they are the same as those on TV selling "expensive" gemstones jewelry, Gutter-guards, " Crystals for rejuvenation, kill cancer, end ED, etc. I love crystals , but they do not channel anything , including your energy. It's all to remove your cash. Gym owners make as much from selling all sorts of odd named chemicals and supplements....as they do from dues. It's the American Way, Rob all you can legally ( or in some cases illegally). IMO, Jim

You’re welcome...feel free to ask questions, we have plenty of brainiacs on the forum (not counting me) to bounce them off. Sometimes we will answer a question because we can’t help ourselves...other times we will help you learn how to find out the info yourself and become able to pull yourself up by your own bootstraps...so...by all means, ask away! You just need to be willing to learn...Spark

My wife got a letter with a coin in it. She was going to give it to me but she forgot. When I finally found out about it, I found that there was a time limit and then I would have to pay. At least, that what it said. I have had this happen before. I spoke to an attorney and found out that if you receive unsolicited items in the mail, they are considered a gift. I got some type of vitamins in the mail and got billed. I wrote them a letter thanking them for their gift, but I think I will through them in the trash, with the stupid Littleton coin.

I feel bad for the gentle man as I have never heard of that place but way back lots of years ago littlleton got me for a small amount that still sits bitter to me and all the collectors that come to me for advice that's the first thing I tell them beware of scammers as they are all over books and research along with coin forum will help them out never buy until you research borrow books if you have to .

I loan out my older books as I keep them all and I tell them this is at least a guideline to go by . and i always tell them never buy off tv or out of magazines ask before you buy

Actually I have bought lots of "specials" from Littleton (6 Sac dollars for $6), but ALWAYS return the "approvals" and have never had any trouble.

My sad story was when I was in college and in a coin store and a lady brought in a beautiful teak case with one-ounce silver slugs of something like "Famous Left-Handed Pitchers Of Yesteryear" and the dealer had to tell her they were only worth melt (only about $1/oz then).

Bradford Exchange has destroyed more beautiful coins then any other company I know... colorizing a 200 year old coin NEVER adds value!
