I have a 1961 Franklen half from mint set, that has two black spots. coin has been in a plastic snap case for several years. What is it ,and can i get it off?
I moved your post here because it will probably get a better response here. And can you post a picture of the coin ?
If they're spots of oxidation, as I suspect, they won't come off. The best you can hope for is to keep the coin in an airtight holder (Kointain, or similar), and they won't progress. Sorry.
Hello jrwill56, If someone talks over a coin, then little drops of saliva can end up on the coins surface. These tiny drops can react with the metal forming spots. Copper coins are the most reactive & silver to a lesser degree. By the time you see the black spot, the metal surface is probably damaged. Another common source of spots is the little droplets expelled when a can of soda is opened. Things like this can show up years later. Very best regards, collect89
need to see it, sometimes if the metal is a combo copper/nickel, they wont mix the metals perfect and it can cause dots, but usally red in my experience.... Need to see a picture
