Good morning, Time to open up a new... (Can of worms) Another Unique piece from the Mike Byers collection I want to share the following CoinWeek article with you - https://coinweek.com/coins/error-coins/mike-byers-mint-error-news-unique-1973-s-kennedy-h
How does the proof checking "worm" leave the mint with the coin, a secret compartment in his/her coffee canister, or lunch bucket, or...? There must be some punishable law infraction for the perpetration/perpetrator of this type of fraud.
It looks like another creation by the San Francisco Midnight Minter from the early 70s. While these are spectacular "errors", I just can't get exited knowing how they were made.
A section of the link; A very small group of Proof errors recently came from a collection that was auctioned by the State of California. The U.S. Secret Service inspected and released this collection to the State of California determining that it was legal to own. The State of California then auctioned the collection and it has been dispersed since the sale. And nobody questioned this obvious mint employee assisted frankencoin? Or told to look away

Surely by slabbing it TPG's are effectively "authenticating" as an error, a deliberate creation of a hybrid coin. Do back door deals get done regarding a percentage of achieved auction price for the now massively inflated item? JMHO
Assisted Mint Error coins struck in an Official US Mint are genuine US Mint Errors. They might not be made in the normal course of the Minting Process, but they were struck as errors. Interpret it as you like. PCGS and NGC will certify these as Mint Errors as long as they were struck in the Mint. I have had, over close to 50 years now, in-person discussions with the Secret Service, US Treasury, Mint Police, and the Chief Mint Police Officer, among others. The short version: with the exception of '33 Double Eagles, '64 Peace Dollars, and '74 Aluminum Cents, in 99.5% of the cases, they do not care about the errors that are 'out there', unless there are current leaks at any of the Mints. I recognize that some error collectors do not consider these to be legit Mint Errors, and that's fine. I do, and so do my clients and most error collectors.
You don't need to. As Fred stated everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I agree with Fred's viewpoint and dealings with these coins. For me they are simply fascinating!
