What were you doing in Niger, coin_nut? Business or pleasure?

Continuing with the Western African States, a 2000 1-francs (KM 10).

A friend of mine was working there, classified type of thing. He brought me a whole sack of coins. Many of them were worn slick, no date visible, after only 10 years or so circulation. I reckon everyone has sand in their pockets over there. Here is a 1996 250 francs 1996 WAS 250 CFCA obv.JPG 1996 WAS 250 CFCA rev.JPG

Your (coin_nut's) comment - "I reckon everyone has sand in their pockets over there" had me laughing out loud.

I suppose we can hang in Canada. Here's a 2008 25-cents celebrating the up-coming 2010 Olympics in Vancouver (KM 768).

1984 Netherlands 5 cents. That animal on the Bermuda cent reverse just looks like a feral hog to me. A warthog is a wild animal in Africa. 1984 NL 5 c obv.JPG 1984 NL 5 c rev.JPG

Britain. 1846 One Centum struck in white metal. The Birmingham company Marrian & Gausby struck the first decimal denominated coins in the country, producing patterns of 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c & 1 centum. The first coins had the legend Smith's Decimal Curency which upset the Royal Mint as they had the sole right to produce coins. Accordingly the legend was changed to read Smith On Decimal Currency, of which this is one example. The precise definition of a centum was never established, with Peck considering it a decimal shilling, or maybe it was 100 cents, or maybe 1/10th of a pound?

The Garter legend was initially engraved HONS, but the S was then corrected with an I. Presumably the engraver thought he was engraving the word PENSE at that point. Other coins are known with the S of PENSE over an underlying I, so clearly a common mistake to make. Probably on auto-pilot and just not concentrating.
