I have had a lot of coins with this across the reverse of, where the STATES, E, dots, and OF, seem weak. All were 1968's, 69's, 70's and 71's. Some more and some less than others. The first pic is a 68 I think, and the second is a 71 grease die 3.jpg Grease die.jpg I thought grease die at first...buuuuut...now I'm confused.

I think the missing E on the second is a grease filled die, and the weak lettering is a worn die.

Appears to be wear and possible environmental damage.

This is a common weak spot for these older high relief LMC's. It is due to Abe's lapel requiring so much metal to fill. It is also a common weak spot on the reverse of wheat cents.

It's common. A weak spot in the design. Glad you learned something new today. It's also normal.
