I had excellent luck with my first post, I will try again.

I am trying to distinguish (sp) the grades of coins. When I was a youngster there was fine x-fine ect...now there is vf-20, ef-40, ms-60, ms-63, ms65. I read something about au-bu.

Is there anywhere I can find out about these?

    thanks for any help

    Here's one reference:

    coin grade scale

I'm sure there are others on the web more detailed. The uncirculated descriptions on this one are particularly sketchy.

Check the other message threads. Ive somewhat exhausted this topic of grades, at least with regard to Morgans. Loose coins: you canNOT trust a dealers grade, unless you buy at AU price. AU is ALMOST uncirculated. Mint states are collectively called BRILLIANT uncirculated. Many mint states. Big jumps in prices between certain Mint state grades. Guys who read my message thread on grading Morgans: RE: MS63 and MS64, further help needed: what are considered the primary focal areas? and secondary focal areas?

In my experience you can't always trust third party graded coins either, afterall it's still an matter of personal opinion when all said a done, except it's one you've had the pleasure of paying extra for.

    Try starting here Coin Grading

Then I would suggest that you buy a copy of Official A.N.A. Grading Standards for United States Coins
