New Caracalla Tetradrachm for my “Murderer’s Row”

    You can really see the Severan period as a second golden age for the kind of naturalism you get from Julio-Claudian and Flavian coins. That almost eerie tightrope between realism and caricature.

    Sadly again I must resort to poor man's copper as I could afford no silver coin of Caracalla. I do have this large bronze medallion, an AE44, struck in Laodocia bought from Gorney & Mosch a long time ago however.

    I think Caracalla had a problem with his diet. He always looked like he was a constipated bully...
