Retired....pure collector (have never parted with anything that I've picked up over the years) Modern/commemoratives with a dash of the "classics". A collector for over 40 years (on and Off). Collector in earnest these last eight years.
I'm 2/3 investor 1/3 collector, perpetual beginner, primarily gold and silver coins with about 5 years of experience as a kid plus the last 5 years as an adult. If something is old, silver, undamaged and cheap, I get really excited.
oh, i forgot to tell mine. (1) i am qualified to retire but i might extend it for four more years. just like another term for president. (2) i am an average collector. but sometimes think of investing rather than collecting. i intend not to sell my collections. but i did sell some unwanted, damaged and bullion coins. (3) i collect coins for more than 40 years. but i never attending the coin auction. and very seldom attending the coin shows or conventions. i don't buy from dealers but frequently shop at u.s. mint. and i never be a member of any organizations or clubs. but i know how to grade coins. (4) i like modern, new and shining coins. gold, silver, nickel or copper. and always like a complete set with certificate, box and capsule. well, i did have a lot of old silver coins. and not forget to say that i also have many prez dollars, statehood quarters and westward journey nickels. (5) currently, i bought a lot of american eagle and buffalo gold coins. proof and uncirculated. previously i did acquired few thousands pieces of american eagle silver dollar. i think average price is around $6.00 a piece. (6) i am addicted in this forum to write or say everything that i knew about coins. and hopefully i can also learn a lot from it.
I,'m sorry buy I don't think your categories are complete and concise enough to fit all of us into any ONE of them. Take me for instance, I major in pennies but also Proof Sets, Morgan Dollars and bullion coins(???) as well as AME's. So where do I fit in?
Just not very familiar with this world of coins. Have to sell some of a collection for my son and am concerned about how to best go about it. Look at my album and tell me what you think I could do better to post please?
Early 30s, single. This is why I can buy coins What do I collect? At the moment Standing Liberty Quarters are the only high grade coins that I buy, I have really 3 levels that I buy them in.. I pick up VF/XF coins if I like them, they go in a Dansco Album. I buy beautiful FH slabbed coins, high grade, and these I tuck away. And I buy every one that I can for within 50c-$1 of melt. Rolls for $100 each, etc. Other stuff... working on a Dansco album for Lincoln cents that I started around 1983 or so, probably earlier. I hoard 90% Silver circulated stuff, mainly SL Quarters, Walking Liberty Halves, Mercury Dimes and anything Barber but mainly SLQs and Walkers. I also have a bunch of GSA dollars, and have been picking up Morgans here and there but the real focus on nice stuff for me are the SLQs.
group I: beginner. group II: set collector group III: hobby collector group IV: middle age group V: 21 - 30 year of collecting also like long walks on the beach and Italian food.
Start by purchasing a Redbook and a grading guide [ANA or Photograde] to get a ballpark idea about what you own and what it might be worth. Any coin shop will buy your coins but you have to be careful not to get cheated. Selling on Ebay is a good way to go too as long as you can post good, clear close-up photos of both sides of the coin.
I wouldn't say professional, I would say advanced. Older coins and slab collector (But just the slabs, not the coins in them.) Hobby collector Not a student but in my forties I don't see myself as middle age yet either. 36 years, continously since 1972 at the age of eleven.
Learning I use coins to hedge stocks and realestate. It has been very good over the last few years. I have grown to like coin sets, and Morgans among others. My knowledge is low on grading and old coins. I have about twenty small to medium gold coins that were left to me by my Grandfather. I had them verified but not graded. If my children have this for part of a legacy, mayby they will delve deeper then I do in to bring up the coins I have in value. I spend most of my time watching assets and buying various investments.
