I’ve been having a lot of fun on the dark side lately. Here is last month’s purchase: These thalers seem to be fairly common, and the price was reasonable. Not sure if the Hapsburg coins were common in world trade, but it seems they must have had a high mintage, so perhaps they were similar to Spanish milled dollars in later centuries?
And here is a Lion Dollar that I just picked up tonight on an eBay auction: I have been wanting a Lion Dollar due to its connection with New Amsterdam and other American colonies, and this EF45 example from Zeeland seemed about right.
It would be about the same size as an English Halfcrown of the same period. Scotland had experienced much higher inflation than England and so by this period a Scottish shilling was worth about 1/12th of an English one. So 30 Scottish shillings is approx 2 1/2 English shillings, or a Half Crown. Still a nice coin and rare!
It's put away so I don't have it on hand right now. But, Paddy is probably spot on. It is in a regular holder and is somewhat average crown size, if I remember correctly.
I collect crown-size coins as well. They have to be silver - for some reason, gold does nothing for me; I think it's ugly, doesn't allow a design to stand out like on silver, and doesn't tone or age well either. My collection is at https://coins.www.collectors-society.com/WCM/CoinCustomSetGallery.aspx?s=24977.
Stunning set @mkivtt! I have admired on multiple occasions. Those sede vacante pieces are in a class of their own.
Here's a Florence issue by the same ruler: very different portrait ! Italy TUSCANY Cosimo II Piastre 1615
The Isle of Man designs by the Pobjoy Mint are wonderful. This one is a 1979 Proof celebrating 300 years of Manx coinage. Mintage was 30,000. Composition Silver (.925) Weight 28.28 g Diameter 38.47 mm
This one came in the mail today and I must say, I'm very happy with it. 1620 Frankfurt Thaler Obverse: Eagle on cross in arc Reverse: Crowned double-headed eagle with imperial orb on the chest.
1777 Ragusa Taler Nice Frankfurt piece Chris, i was following It too, but my bids were on some Nürnberg Talers!
1557 Brabant ecu, Philip II The coin is 33.7 grams, nothing suspicious about it, but at a ping test , it makes an awful short noise. Could it be caused by the crack between BR and AB?By the way, is this an ecu or a daalder ?
I found a listing on ma-shops. Google translate shows this: At its introduction in 1557 it was issued as a silver ½ real at a rate of 35 pence, equal to the ½ golden real. On these coins we see Philips' motto 'Dominus Michi Aduitor' (the lord is my helper). Ultimately, the price would later rise to 50 pence. The coin soon came to be known as Philipsdaalder and the name ½ silver real soon fell out of use. https://www.ma-shops.com/henzen/item.php?id=52566
Some rupees I picked up from another collector here on CT. Any help with what variety the Vicky Rupee is, so many I see
