I can manipulate the image enough to see that it is reverse up and FOR A, but the focus fades before DOLLAR and the leaf.
Halfway-decent S-76a For sale on the bay: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/373138328265
It's a S-77. Also 10.5g (162 grains.) But it does have the squared up edge of many 76b s that caused me to jump on them thinking they were 76a s.
I almost suspected there was more there with better photos. The seller's photos were blurry and detail was still detectable. It's a little backward with G towards the core and fr/ag at the perimeter. But reverse dentils are strong too. It's certainly a mixed bag of strength and weakness. I'd still like to see a photo of the leaf. I suspect you'll do well on this one.
I have a suspicion that they continued using the castaining machine for a short time after converting to the 168 grain standard and initially removing the lettering. These squared up edges almost all have flat surfaces and incusions or grip marks which are easily confused with remnants of lettering. After a short while, it appears they discontinued it's use on copper coins in favor of the more rounded edges.
I went to the Indianapolis coin show this morning and picked this beautiful lady out of the half price box. It’s struck of a thick planchette with indents of some kind. I can’t get a good photo of the edge.
Definitely the S-261 with the large Obverse die crack. Without a weight different from 10.5g to 10.7g or better photos showing a mint edge (foreign planchet?), I'd have to suspect edges were damaged post mint. Still nice details out of a half price box.
Here thou goeth: that struck me as weird. It looks strike related because that area of the reverse is just blank. No traces of the lettering despite a bold wreath and rims. It isn’t corroded away either. Maybe struck through grease or misaligned die? I have her at VG details. The obverse looks closer to F/VF
Excellent edge shot. A Strong edge. It does look like several 19bs have that letter weakness while stronger at the core and dentils. Very unusual. I'm very happy for you.
I'd like to ask a personal favor. This was lost (not stolen) when I lost a change pouch. If you see it anywhere, I'd like to repurchase it. It's the downside of carrying around a pocket piece.
I can't make up my mind which Photo to keep. Seller's with my Album Treatment or my own. I'm leaning towards the sellers.
