I'm looking for verification of the authenticity of this unplated Lincoln. I know a lot of these Lincolns have been subjected to chemicals so I just want to make sure this one is real. Mike Diamond, you out there?
It looks a bit funny to me - the rims appear a bit rounded, but there is still a good amount of separation between the lettering and rim... If it were an acid job, typically the rims would make the coin look more like it had a smaller diameter, correct?
I would say no. Notice on the reverse that the surfaces appear to be rough and porous, especially toward the center of the coin. On a genuine non-plated cent the surfaces should be smooth just like a newly struck cent. There is also no luster, jusa dead appearance. Non-plated cents have the same metal flow and luster as a regular cent.
Hey I made a thread about a coin that looks a lot like this! Posting pics.... Taken on macro, flash off in natural sunlight. 12.4 MP Whoever Mike Diamond is please give your opinion on mine to. This was really the only cool thing I found searching through 5387 pennies. :goof:
I run across one of those about every 5000 coins or so. Look exactly like both examples above, down to the pitting and raised welts. In some cases the coin has been eaten away at too long and the lettering becomes thin. A lot of chemistry experiments going on out there.
