Well, they used to issue them at face value. Whether this 2008 coin was a one-year exception (ie. return to "silver at face" in 2009) or not, I don't know yet. But the concept is not that uncommon - here in Germany the €10 silver commems are issued at face too.

Austria does the same thing with the €5 and €10 silver pieces; Spain does it with the €12 silver coins. However, all those pieces are "collector coins", legal tender in the issuing member state only. That is, unlike the "real" euro coins they can only be used in a small part of the currency union.

Besides, you need to pick them up at banks or post offices - you will hardly ever find one in circulation. Same in Switzerland (10 fr) and the UK (£5) by the way.

As for next year's "Netherlands-Manhattan" coin, the idea behind it is that in 1609 Henry Hudson, British but working for the Dutch VOC (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie), explored Manhattan Island and the Hudson river. Could be considered a little far fetched as an occasion to issue a Dutch collector coin, but heck, it may sell well in various parts of the world. :D

The NL/AU coin is a fine piece with a nice design in my opinion. Now that de Ruyter piece ... well, I don't like it that much. The only interesting part is how the motto onze parel - hun schrik (which means something like "our jewel - their horror") is split and spread across the coin.

No but I am sure that you are dying to tell us Ruben LOL One point though the coins can be spent in the countries of origin and are legal tender (If you are silly enough to want to spend a silver coin LOL) as for the £5 they do a base metal version that you can buy for £5 :D

Technically correct, but in a currency union that, when it comes to "real" money, uses the same cash, that is almost pointless. :D At least here in Euroland, such collector coins are not intended for circulation.

It would have been possible to make all those euro collector coins legal tender in all of Euroland. Most probably they would still not really circulate then, sure. But the way the collector coins are issued, they are just regional money. Spending a silver coin is, by itself, not actually "dumb" - but a Dutch €5 piece for example is worthless a few kilometers away, in some Belgian or German city which is part of the very same currency union and uses the very same circulation coins and notes. Makes a lot of sense.

So those roundlings you may well consider to be "non-coins", Ruben. But why the British or Swiss pieces?

I have used as payment and recieved as payment £5 coins.

I wish people used them more actually...would be cool.

I love the architectural coin...and I'm sure I'll own one within the next month...if i can find one.

Seriously Christian it is not only technicaly correct but also legaly correct, they are coins, you can spend them if you so wish within the issuing country, this is what makes them coins as opposed to shall we say silver rounds :smile
Just because some buerecrats have decided that they only have a value were issued dont make them any less a coin does it?
I quite agree that they are issued with collectors in mind but then again so are most bullion coins such as the American silver eagle but people still call those coins LOL

So here's the problem and not only with this peice, but my Panda and Aussie Kallobaro (however it is spelled) as well...

Coins have flipped reverse and Medal have reverses that are same North South orientation obverse and reverse, like Olympic Medals that hang from ribbons. These are all medals as i learned things, and not coins.

Well, it was a little different. Apparently pretty much every mint simply wanted to continue its pre-euro traditions, and an agreement was not reached. So at the end they probably said, heck, those pieces do not circulate anyway, but calling them "legal tender" makes them more attractive than medals, so let's make them regional money only.

Money that I can only use in a limited part of a currency (and cash!) union is simply second class money in my opinion. Sure, nice to collect, but that is about it. :D

That may be true for the US. I know you make your reverses upside down. But this topic is about a coin from Europe. :)

Ha, I use second class train tickets, and fly second (oops, third) class, so why not buy and keep a couple second class coins. :) It just bugs me. But since those pieces are not really used like regular cash anyway, I am just mildly annoyed ...
