On pennies what does vdb represent, and how about vam on morgans, is there a list somewhere of such abbreviations? Are they even abbreviations? Thanks in advance:bow:
geez, what a dumb question. lol, just kidding. Its not dumb at all! VDB is the initials for the designer of Wheat Cent http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_David_Brenner
Hi Andrew, Victor David Brenner the coins designer. http://www.coinfacts.com/small_cents/lincoln_cents/wheat_ear_cents/1909s_vdb_cent.htm For vam info: http://www.vamworld.com/VAM And for other acronyms: http://cointerms.com/index.htm Ask away Andrew, you'll be swamped with answers to your questions. Welcome to CT. Denis
The VDB stands for Victor David Brenner, the designer of the Lincoln cent. As far as a glossary of numismatic terms, the PCGS website has this: http://www.pcgs.com/lingo.chtml
To Andrew67 First...the V.D.B. initials on the bottom reverse of the 1909 P & S Lincoln Cents are the initials of the Lincoln Cent designer, Victor David Brenner. Collectors and non coin collectors voiced very verbally, and in print, their objections to such a flagrant display of Brenner's initials that the mint elected to remove them later on in 1909, thus there are four different 1909 Cents. The initials were never reapplied to the reverse, and it was not until 1918 Brenner's initials were returned to the cent. However, the V.D.B. was placed on the 1918 cent in a less conspicious area, the slant of Luncoln's shoulder, and remains there right through the 2009 Luncoln Cents about to be struck. I leave the explanation of VAM to another member more qualified than I am to answer. Clinker, free coin fun website http://clinker.bravehost.com/funpage.html
VAM stands for Van Allen - Mallis, the two authors of a terrific book on Morgan and Peace dollars. Their full names are Leroy Van Allen and George Mallis. The book is entitled "Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars". FANTASTIC book. Sure, it describes tons of VAMs, but it does SO much more. HIGHLY recommended reading. Available through Amazon / E-Bay / coins shows etc. Hopefully the first of many questions... none are "stupid" !
You mean "thiourea". Why would anyone want to clean a coin? I've been burnt a couple of times by coins that were cleaned. Thanks to everyone who answered my "stupid" question. And thanks for the compliment Mark I liked it more when I thought it hadn't been cleaned and retoned! Still a nice coin tho.
I've just recently found this site and have been asking PLENTY of stupid questions. Everyone on here is great (so far) lol Welcome to CT. Also, that ingredient used in dips(above)...... Sounds like we could pee on coins and save the trouble, just kidding
