    Wow!

But this sort of changes the picture of Orla as a civilian passenger, maybe? This would have put her in the thick of it. So we're back to "hmm" over her feminine presence in a war zone.

Could she have been a nurse? What other shipboard roles would an American lady have had aboard a vessel in WW2? She was 39 in 1944.

I'm guessing that would be the island of Roi Namur. If memory serves me correctly, the entirety of Kwajalein Atoll is currently part of a ballistic missile test range run by the U.S. Army.

No doubt. Rabbit holes like this are tremendously fun to burrow down into.

Who will be the first to find a photo of Orla N. Beebe? Or the SS Cape Constantine?

If you're looking for naval photos, I'd highly recommend this particular site.

However, since the Cape Constantine was a Type C1 freighter, it might take some time and luck to find a photo considering hundreds were built.

Curiously enough, this one website refers to Orla as a he.

    So this seems right?:

    "Feb 7, 1944
    Orla N. Beebe
    on board Cape
    Constantine
    Julian Bond
    on board good
    ship SS Constantine.
    Chas M. Wascome Jr.
    Roi Namur Island
    Marshall Island
    First Pay
    3/3/44
    Roi Namur
    Marshall"

Orla Beebe and Charles Wascome Jr. were pharmacist mates assigned to Marine Air Group 31 in 1944.

I wondered if "Orla" could also be a man's name. That would be an interesting twist.

But the only person with that name I've heard of before is an Irish woman.

Good work, y'all. These mysteries seem to solve up nicer when several minds are at the task.

I got in contact with Randy Beebe. He says he's distantly related to Orla. 8th cousin. He doesn't have any pictures, but he is super interested.

Love it when these things evolve. I've gotten all caught up in this now.

Y'all might remember the last time I had one of these kind of quests.
