I know nothing about thalers other than I've heard about them before. They seem very nice. What is the story behind the coin?
The Thaler has a rich history, tracing it's origin back to the 15th century, when european rulers began to issue large silver coins, to counter debasing of the currency, which followed by years of warfare. The first coin to bear the name Thaler was a large silver coin minted 1518 in Joachimsthal ( litterly Joachims valley), in modern day Czech republic, the Joachimsthaler. Mints in other valleys (thal) in the same area as Joachimsthal began to mint coins equal to the Joachimsthaler, and soon all this types of silver coins where simply called thalers. The thaler became a popular coin, mints in other parts of Europe began to mint their own coins named thaler, and until around 1870 the Thaler was the main currency in central and northern europe. The silver content in the thaler varied through it´s existence, and different states minted different types of thalers to different times: Reichsthaler, Conventionsthaler, rijksdaalder, Rigsdaler, Vereinsthaler, Kronenthaler etc. The most famous thaler ever is undoubtedly the Maria Theresia thaler:
