This is in an auction that I'm watching. It is listed as an 1857 Obv of '56 S-1 Flying Eagle. There is a heavy clash on the reverse.

What do you guys/gals say this coin is? 57Obv.jpg 57Rev.jpg

This is not a type of the 56, it is a straight up 1857 FEC. It is a pretty nice example though, most copper nickle cents aren't this crisply struck. 1857obv56.jpg

I agree that it has a sharp strike. There is only a little weakness on the eagle’s tail. That feature plus the “ONE CENT” in the reverse are often weak.

The color is unnatural, but it could just be the lighting.

Not the S1 or S8. Nice coin and clash.

Thanks all. I have a couple obv of '56, so i like tracking their sales, and I'm pretty well-versed in them. That's what I told the house. It should be up tonight (or tomorrow), and I'm waiting to see if the description changes. So far, the house still has it as an obv of '56. :banghead:

This is the S-8. Clashed with the quarter die.

Yup. I *think* the pre-bidders see the clash, and think it's the S-8, and that's pushed the pre-bids up over $525. But it could be they just like the coin.

I think you are right about the clash, at $525 you can have a CAC 1857 AU 58 and pocket $75

That’s a very nice coin! I see a reverse die clash of the obv. Correct? Not sure which variety this is though.
