1990 p quarter extra wing feather

    I found this in my change, what is your opinion extra feather or die break on left wing 20200728_211738.jpg

    Yes, it’s a small die break. Back in 1990, I started noticing small cracks and breaks in the same location on new quarters. I started saving them but after a while, I had about 15 or 20 and most appeared to be from different dies. Some had also light crack extending to the rim. Since it looked to me like a design issue occurring on multiple dies, I decided they weren’t anything special, and spent them.

    Maybe, but I was seeing them with some regularity, so there were probably a number of dies that cracked in this area. If I recall correctly, the location of the crack on the wing varied on different coins, which led me to believe this was a problem with multiple dies. That's why I quit saving them. I imaging the mint made some minor design adjustments to reduce the stress in the wing area and the problem was eliminated.

    Still, it is a mint error, so save it if you like it
