the answer to how do i make them may sound strange, i can,t draw anything with a pencil, pen, artist brush, etc. my drawings look like a 3 year old child,s drawing....but i can look at a picture or think of a face in my head and take engraving tools and cut it out on a coin...this carving was one i carved by a ideal in my head, no picture was used....

Neat! So, what kind of engraving tool do you use, and how do you get the metal soft enough to engrave?
    Thanks,
    SM

......and I still stand by an earlier question/suggestion....have you ever thought of designing and submitting a coin for minting? I know the US doesn't change coins that often (current times excluded), but I've heard rumors of a new design for the 100th anniverary of the lincoln cent. Anyone else with me on this? :)

i use the same tools that knife and gun engravers use, click on a hand engraving site and you can view the tools...

sorry about not answering you question before, the u.s. mint does have a program for submitting new designs, but a person has to be high up in the coin design world or have a lot of degrees to submit designs....i,m just a old hillbilly from ky with not much education...

I'm a professional nature photographer and I have seen many, many of your designs. I my opinion you are one of the best engravers out there. I wish I could afford one of your designs. My 8 year old daughters loves hobo nickels and she is still sad I lost a bid on someones else's carving of a donkey, called "Daisy".

    Keep up the GREAT work.

I think it was DaVinci who said of a large chunk of marble before he started sculpting, the statue was always in there, it just needed to have the rest of the stone chipped away. (or something like that) Sounds like that's how you work. Cool!

It brought a smile to my face--fine work.

And I think you should definitely do a Scarecrow and a Tin Woodsman, too!

    Hop to it

Would you like a couple of Australian Large penneys with Kangaroos on them to see what you can come up with.

I would'nt want them back, just would like to see your creativity with the big rats.
    :D

I like this train of thought. Have you thought about doing a series, maybe a hobo family? Something like that??
