    Hi guys,

Just wanted to find out what this coin is worth? Should I consider having it graded? 1868 Sheild Nickel (Obverse).jpg 1868 Sheild Nickel (Reverse).jpg

Looks like it has been in the ground for a while. Environmental damage. I personally would not waste money on getting it graded. Wait for more opinions...

IMO, EF to, maybe?, AU. Value = $50 - $100? Don't know if it will grade. Wait for other opinions.

I wouldn't since it looks to have been in the ground, still imo has some nice details left but the 1868 also has the 2nd highest mintage at close to 29 million produced.

At best i would say a $35 to maybe $45 coin, (jmo) If you found it metal detecting? nice find!

No I did not find it metal detecting. It was handed down to me and was kept in a box. So no, it was not in the ground.

At one time it was. That's why it's the color it is.

It has the sharpness of an EF-AU coin, but it is corroded. When a copper-nickel coin corrodes, it turns brown or black. As it is, a dealer might try to get $10 for it, but he won't pay anywhere near that. What it should be is a "junk box" coin that might sell for a couple dollars to a young collector.
